XY-180 / XY-280 / XY-380 Aquarium Sponge Filter – Bio Sponge Internal Fish Tank Filter

Keep your aquarium water cleaner and your aquatic pets healthier with the XY Series Aquarium Sponge Filter, available in XY-180, XY-280 and XY-380 models.

Designed for mechanical and biological filtration, these sponge filters trap suspended debris while providing a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. The gentle, air-driven filtration makes them particularly useful for betta tanks, shrimp tanks, fry tanks, breeding tanks, planted aquariums and aquariums with small or delicate fish.

Why Choose the XY Series Aquarium Sponge Filter?

🐠 Mechanical + Biological Filtration

The sponge helps capture dirt, waste particles and suspended impurities while its porous surface provides a habitat for beneficial nitrifying bacteria.

💧 Gentle Water Flow

Unlike high-flow power filters, the sponge filtration system provides gentle circulation, making it suitable for betta fish, shrimp, fry and other delicate aquatic life.

🦐 Ideal for Shrimp & Fry Tanks

The sponge design helps reduce the risk of small fish, fry and shrimp being pulled into a powerful filter intake, making it a popular choice for breeding and shrimp setups.

🌱 Great for Planted Aquariums

A sponge filter provides filtration and water movement while maintaining relatively gentle flow, making it suitable for many planted aquarium setups.

💨 Air Pump Powered

The XY sponge filter works with an aquarium air pump. Air drawn through the filter creates water movement and helps improve oxygenation.

Note: Air pump and airline tubing are not included unless specifically mentioned in the product variant.

🧽 Easy to Clean & Reuse

When the sponge becomes dirty, remove it and gently rinse/squeeze it using water taken from the aquarium during a water change. Avoid washing biological filter sponges with chlorinated tap water, as this can affect beneficial bacteria.

Choose the Right XY Model

Model Recommended Use
XY-180 Small aquariums, nano tanks, betta tanks, fry & shrimp setups
XY-280 Small to medium aquariums, shrimp tanks & community setups
XY-380 Medium-sized aquariums requiring greater sponge filtration

Always select the filter according to your aquarium size, stocking level and required water flow.

How Does a Sponge Filter Work?

Connect the sponge filter to a suitable aquarium air pump using airline tubing. As air passes through the filter, water is drawn through the sponge. The sponge mechanically traps suspended particles while its porous surface provides an area for beneficial bacteria to grow.

The result is gentle filtration and water movement without the strong intake associated with some conventional power filters.

Important Maintenance Tip

For best biological performance, clean the sponge periodically depending on aquarium conditions. During routine maintenance, rinse the sponge gently in removed aquarium water rather than directly under chlorinated tap water.
